A pleat looks like a simple fold, and the guides treat it that way: here is a knife pleat, here is a box pleat, here is how to sew one. What they skip is the part that decides whether the pleat survives the first wash and what it adds to the cost: how the pleat is held, and what fabric will hold it.

What are the types of pleats?
Pleats are named by their shape and fold direction: the knife, box, inverted, accordion, sunray, cartridge and kick pleats are the ones worth knowing. Underneath the names is a more useful split for making them: every pleat is either pressed, with a sharp crease, or unpressed, falling in soft folds.
A pleat is folded fabric held in place, and how it is held, by pressing, by stitching or by heat, matters as much as its shape. A pleat stitched down its whole length is really a tuck; a pleat set with heat is permanent only on the right fabric.
Why the pleat type matters
A pleat is a design detail with real production consequences. It shapes how a garment moves, but it also drives fabric cost and depends entirely on the fabric to hold.
- Volume and movement: pleats add controlled fullness and let a garment expand as the body moves, from a school-skirt box pleat to a fluid accordion.
- Fabric cost: a pleat uses roughly three times the fabric it covers, so a pleated panel multiplies the cloth on every unit; it is one of the clearer cost drivers in a design.
- Permanence depends on the fabric: a sharp permanent pleat needs a synthetic fibre that will heat-set; on a natural fibre the same pleat softens or falls out in the wash.
- It has to be specified: depth, spacing, direction and whether the pleat is pressed or stitched all change the result, so the pleat belongs in the spec, not just the sketch.
Pressed, unpressed, and how a pleat holds
Before the named types, the useful distinction is how a pleat is finished and held, because that is what decides whether it lasts.
- Pressed pleats: ironed or heat-set into a sharp crease; crisp and structured, the look of a uniform skirt or a tailored trouser.
- Unpressed pleats: left to fall in soft, rounded folds; a gentler drape with volume but no hard edge.
- Stitched pleats: held down with stitching for part or all of their length; stitched all the way down, a pleat becomes a tuck. Partial stitching controls the pleat at the waist and releases it below.
- Heat-set (permanent) pleats: pressed with heat and steam so the pleat survives washing without re-pressing; this works only on thermoplastic synthetic fibres.
That last point is the one the sewing guides skip. Permanent heat-set pleating relies on the thermoplastic nature of polyester and nylon: the fabric needs to be at least roughly 45 percent polyester, and 100 percent gives the sharpest, most durable pleat. A natural fibre like wool, cotton or silk can be pleated, but the pleat is not permanent and needs re-pressing, unless the cloth is given a chemical treatment. It is why so many pleated skirts are polyester.
The main pleat types and how each is formed
Almost every pleat is one of a handful of forms, and grouping them by how they are folded is more useful than an alphabetical list.
- Knife pleat: all the folds face the same direction, each with a visible outer fold and a hidden underfold; the most common pleat, seen around skirt waistbands and on kilts.
- Box pleat: two knife pleats folded away from each other so the folds face outward, with the fullness behind; structured and even, the pleat of school uniforms and A-line skirts.
- Inverted pleat: a box pleat in reverse, two knife pleats folded toward each other so the folds meet at the front; it hides fullness discreetly and is common as a single pleat.
- Accordion and crystal pleats: narrow, sharp zigzag folds, usually under half an inch and crystal finer still, made by a professional pleater and heat-set; they expand and contract like the instrument.
- Sunray (sunburst) pleat: fine pleats cut on a circle so they are narrow at the waist and fan wider toward the hem, also a heat-set, specialist job.
- Cartridge pleat: rounded, tube-like folds gathered onto a band, historically used for full skirts and Elizabethan ruffs where a lot of fabric meets a small waist.
- Kick pleat: a short, functional pleat, usually an inverted pleat, set into the hem of a narrow skirt to allow walking ease.
The most famous pleats of all are the Fortuny pleats: Mariano Fortuny patented his method of fine, permanent silk pleating in 1909, and his Delphos gowns still hold their pleats more than a century later, by a process he never fully disclosed.
How a pleat is specified
A pleat is only as good as its spec. A few measurements and one fabric decision are what let a factory reproduce it.
- Depth and width: the depth is how far the fabric folds back under the pleat; the width is the face of the pleat you see. Together they set the look and the fabric it uses.
- Spacing and direction: how far apart the pleats sit and which way the folds face; knife pleats all run one way, box and inverted pleats alternate.
- Underlay: on a box or inverted pleat, the fabric that sits behind the folds; sometimes a separate strip is inserted there to save cloth.
- Pressed, stitched or heat-set: the spec has to say whether the pleat is pressed, stitched down and how far, or permanently heat-set, because each is a different operation and fabric.
Naming these in the tech pack, along with the fabric, is what turns a pleated sketch into a garment a factory can cut and fold consistently. And because a pleat uses about three times the fabric it covers, the depth and spacing feed straight into the cost sheet and the cutting plan.
How to choose a pleat
For a brand, a pleat is a design, fabric and cost decision, and the fabric decision is the one that most often goes wrong.
- Match, then spec: match the pleat to the fabric first, a synthetic for a sharp permanent pleat and a stable cloth so the pleat does not collapse, then set the depth, spacing, direction and finish in the tech pack.
A few faults recur, and each traces back to the fabric or the spec.
- Pleats that fall out: a permanent pleat attempted on a natural fibre that will not heat-set; use a thermoplastic fabric, or accept that the pleat needs pressing.
- Uneven pleats: depth or spacing not marked accurately, so the pleats drift; the spec and the marking have to be precise.
- Collapsed, limp pleats: a fabric too soft to hold the fold; use a crisper cloth or a pressed rather than an unpressed pleat.
- Bulk at the waist: deep pleats stacking too much fabric into the seam; reduce the depth or use an underlay.
And approve a pleated sample on the production fabric. A pleat behaves differently on polyester, wool and silk, so the sample on the real cloth, after washing, is the spec the factory has to match.
