Straight vs contour: why rise decides

The most common mistake is using a straight band where a contour band belongs. The deciding factor is the rise, where the waistband sits on the body.

A firm interfacing, often a pre-slotted or ready-cut waistband interfacing, keeps a straight or contour band crisp and stops it folding over in wear. It is deliberately chosen firmer than the shell, the opposite of the usual match-the-fabric rule, because the band's whole job is to stay rigid while the garment moves.

Tailored trousers add a waistband curtain, an inner strip, often grosgrain or a soft lining, that finishes the inside edge and grips the shirt so the trousers stay put and do not slide down. Elastic and casing waistbands

Where waistbands fail

The waistband takes more strain than almost any other part of a garment, since it carries the weight and is pulled every time the wearer sits, bends, or dresses. A few faults recur, and a good spec designs them out before the first sample.
