What is textile manufacturing?
Textile manufacturing is the industrial transformation of raw fibre into finished textile products: fibre production, spinning into yarn, weaving or knitting into fabric, dyeing and finishing, and final assembly into garments or other goods. Each stage has its own machinery, economics and geography.

How we got here, in one paragraph
Textile making was humanity's first industry to mechanize: spinning and weaving machines built the factories of the industrial revolution. The twentieth century added the synthetic era, nylon, then polyester, and the late twentieth moved mass production to Asia. The twenty-first is adding a fourth layer: data, as every stage becomes tracked, disclosed and compared.
The five stages of textile manufacturing
1. Fibre production
Everything starts with fibre, natural or man-made. The world produced 132 million tonnes of it in 2024, an all-time high, and the mix answers most questions about the industry: polyester alone is 78 million tonnes, 59 percent of everything, and 88 percent of it is made from virgin fossil inputs. Cotton follows far behind at 24.5 million tonnes.
Fibre choice is the single most consequential manufacturing decision a brand makes: it fixes the raw-material cost, most of the environmental profile, and what the garment can become at end of life. Certification is now measurable at this stage too: about a third of global cotton comes from certified programs, and roughly two-thirds of man-made cellulosics use certified or controlled wood feedstock.
2. Spinning: fibre becomes yarn
Staple fibres are cleaned, carded, drawn and twisted into yarn; synthetic filaments are extruded and textured. Yarn quality, its count, twist and regularity, decides fabric quality before a single thread is woven. Spinning is capital-intensive and highly automated, which is why it clusters near fibre supply rather than near labor.
3. Weaving and knitting: yarn becomes fabric
Two families dominate: woven fabrics, made on looms from interlaced warp and weft, structured and stable; and knits, made from interlooped yarn, stretchy and fast to produce. A third route skips yarn altogether: nonwovens, where fibres are bonded or felted directly into fabric, the technology behind interlinings, filters and much technical textile.
The choice shapes everything downstream, from handfeel to how a factory line is organized. Mills at this stage are the hidden middle of the industry: few brands know them, every brand depends on them.
4. Dyeing, printing and finishing
The wet-processing stage gives fabric its color, print and performance, and concentrates the industry's environmental load: dyeing and treatment of textiles is estimated to cause around 20 percent of global water pollution. It is also chemically complex, which is why regulation keeps landing here first.
5. Assembly: cut, make, trim
The final stage cuts fabric and sews garments. It remains stubbornly labor-intensive, a sewing machine still needs a person, which is why assembly migrates toward labor cost and trade access while the capital-heavy upstream stages stay put. That asymmetry explains the world map that follows.
Who makes the world's textiles?
The honest answer requires splitting one question into two, because textiles and clothing have different maps.
- Clothing assembly is dispersing: China remains the largest single exporter but its share of world clothing exports fell to 29.6 percent in 2024, its lowest level since 2010. Bangladesh holds 6.9 percent and Vietnam 6.1 percent.
- Textile production is concentrating: China's share of world textile exports rose to 43.3 percent in 2024, up from 41.5 percent a year earlier.
- Asia as a whole accounted for over 70 percent of world textiles and clothing exports, a share that grew 11 points in five years.
Read together, the two maps say something most sourcing decks miss: the sewing moved, the fabric did not. Vietnam illustrates it perfectly: its garment industry depends on imported textile inputs for around 64 percent of the value it exports. A jacket can say made in Vietnam while its fabric, dye and trims answer to Chinese mills.
For sourcing teams, this is the real meaning of diversification: shifting assembly out of one country does not shift the upstream dependency, and tier-2 and tier-3 mapping is where the actual exposure lives.
The numbers that define the industry
- 132 million tonnes of fibre produced in 2024, more than double the level of 2000, heading for roughly 169 million tonnes by 2030 on current trends.
- Polyester: 78 million tonnes, 59 percent of all fibre, 88 percent virgin fossil-based.
- Recycled fibres: 7.6 percent of the market, and less than 1 percent of global fibre comes from recycling actual textiles rather than bottles.
- People: more than 90 million workers in textiles and clothing worldwide, predominantly women.
- Trade: textiles and clothing represent about 3.7 percent of world merchandise exports.
- Value: only about 36 percent of a textile export's value is added by the sector itself; the rest comes from upstream industries and services, which alone supply around 35 percent.
Two of those numbers form the industry's central tension: production is racing upward while textile-to-textile circularity remains statistically negligible. Whatever the marketing says, the material system is still linear.
Where the money sits
The value-added figure deserves a pause: manufacturing itself captures barely a third of what a textile export is worth, with upstream industries and services taking the rest. That is why manufacturing countries push to climb the chain, why brands guard design and retail margins, and why owning the data about the chain has become its own form of leverage.
The counter-current: technical and nearshored
One current runs against the Asian concentration: technical textiles. US textile manufacturing is growing fastest in high-tech categories such as medical textiles, where automation, IP and speed matter more than labor cost. Expect the same logic, technical products made near their markets, to shape European reshoring too.
Where the impact concentrates
Environmental impact is not spread evenly across the five stages; it clusters, and knowing where changes what a brand should measure first.
- Fibre: synthetics tie the industry to oil, textiles consume on the order of 70 million barrels a year, while cotton is among the most pesticide-intensive crops on earth.
- Wet processing: the roughly 20 percent share of global water pollution attributed to dyeing and treatment makes stage four the environmental epicenter.
- Use and after: synthetic garments shed plastic microfibres with every wash, an estimated 15,000 tonnes per year escape into the environment in the EU alone despite wastewater treatment.
This is why credible sustainability work starts with a manufacturing map rather than a slogan: you cannot reduce what you have not located.
What to ask a manufacturing partner
For buyers, the map translates into five questions that separate serious partners from opaque ones: where does your fabric actually come from, and can you name the mill; which certifications cover the fibre and the wet processing; how do you treat dyehouse effluent; what data can you share per order, not per audit; and who are your own tier-2 suppliers. A partner who cannot answer the last one cannot help you comply with what is coming.
Manufacturing is becoming traceable, by law
For decades the five stages were a black box behind the label. That era is closing. France already requires brands above certain thresholds to disclose the country where a garment's weaving, dyeing and printing, and assembly each take place. The EU's Digital Product Passport will extend structured product data across the single market, with textiles in the first wave.
The practical consequence: the manufacturing map, who spins, weaves, dyes and sews each reference, is turning from tribal knowledge into a data requirement. Compliance, sourcing and sustainability teams now need the same dataset, at the same granularity, kept current.
