Garment Washing: Types, Uses and How It Works

Garment washing is a finishing process done on the finished garment, not the fabric, to create a faded look, soften the hand and stabilise sizing. The main types are enzyme, stone, acid, bleach and rinse wash. Enzyme wash is replacing stone wash: it fades denim with less damage, water and pumice.

The soft hand and lived-in fade of a good pair of jeans is not how the denim came off the loom. It is put there at the very end, after the garment is sewn, by washing it. Garment washing is where a stiff, dark, identical run of product becomes the finished look a customer actually buys.

What is garment washing?

Garment washing is a wet-processing step carried out on the finished, sewn garment rather than on the fabric or yarn. The garment is tumbled in industrial machines with water, chemicals, enzymes or abrasive stones to change its appearance, feel and dimensions.

It matters because it is the last big lever on the product. Two identical pairs of jeans can leave the same factory looking completely different depending on how they were washed, which is why the wash recipe is as much a design decision as the fabric or the cut.

A wash runs in stages, not one dip: desizing to strip the starch left from weaving, then the main wash or abrasion for the effect, then neutralising the chemistry, softening and drying. Dry processes are often layered in too, hand-sanding, grinding and laser whiskering to place localised worn effects and fades exactly where the designer wants them, so a single finished look can combine several dry and wet steps in a fixed sequence the factory repeats for every single unit.

Why brands wash garments

A garment wash does several jobs at once, and most washed products are chasing more than one of them.

  • The look: a faded, worn, vintage or distressed appearance, from a soft overall fade to sharp high-contrast effects, is the main reason denim is washed.
  • The hand feel: washing softens a stiff garment and makes it comfortable straight off the shelf, instead of needing to be broken in.
  • Dimensional stability: washing takes residual shrinkage out of the finished garment, so it holds its size, and it removes the sizing starch and impurities left from production.

Because the wash sits at the end of the line, it is also where a lot of a garment's water, energy and chemical footprint is decided, which is why the method matters as much as the effect.

The main types of garment wash

Most washes fall into a handful of families, often combined to hit a target look.

  • Enzyme wash (bio-stoning): cellulase enzymes gently abrade the fibre surface, giving a faded look and a soft, uniform hand with little fabric damage. It is the modern default.
  • Stone wash: pumice stones tumble with the garments to physically abrade and fade them, giving a worn, textured look, but with more fabric wear and waste.
  • Acid wash (moon or snow wash): pumice soaked in an oxidiser such as chlorine or potassium permanganate creates a sharp, high-contrast blue-and-white marbled effect.
  • Bleach wash: an oxidising bleach such as sodium hypochlorite lightens the whole garment to a paler, more even shade.
  • Rinse or normal wash: a light wash that removes sizing and impurities and softens the garment with minimal fading, for a clean, dark finish.

These are routinely stacked. A very common sequence is desizing, then abrasion with enzymes or stones, then brightening and softening, so a single garment may pass through several steps to reach one look.

Enzyme wash vs stone wash

This is the choice that defines most modern denim finishing. Both create a faded, worn look, but they get there differently, and enzyme wash has been steadily displacing stone wash.

  • Stone wash: a mechanical process. Pumice physically scrapes the surface, which gives a characterful, slightly rough result but damages the fabric, wears out equipment and leaves stone sludge to dispose of.
  • Enzyme wash: a biochemical process. Cellulase enzymes break down the surface fibres and release indigo, giving a cleaner, more uniform fade and a softer hand with far less damage.

The data is one-sided. Studies of neutral cellulase find it preserves the great majority of the fabric's strength while cutting pumice use by over 90%, and enzyme washing uses less water, energy and chemistry per garment while giving better shape retention. In practice the two are often combined, an enzyme-stone wash, running the enzyme first to soften and reduce fuzz, then a little stone for extra character.

Sustainable garment washing

Traditional denim washing is resource-heavy: lots of water, energy, pumice and chemicals, plus a wastewater problem. That footprint is why the finishing end of denim has changed faster than almost any other part of the process.

  • Enzymes over stones: swapping pumice for cellulase is the single biggest win, cutting water, damage and waste at once.
  • Ozone and laser: ozone gas fades denim with little water, and laser etching burns in worn effects and patterns digitally, replacing manual scraping and chemicals.
  • Sandblasting, phased out: spraying sand to distress denim was effective but caused silicosis in workers, so it has been banned or dropped by responsible brands.

For a brand, the wash is now a sustainability decision as much as an aesthetic one, and specifying a lower-impact method is one of the clearer wins available in production.

Garment washing vs garment dyeing vs pre-shrinking

Three finishing terms get mixed up, and they do different jobs.

  • Garment washing: alters look, hand and size on a sewn garment, mainly by fading and softening.
  • Garment dyeing: adds or changes colour on a sewn garment, rather than changing an existing colour's shade the way a wash does.
  • Pre-shrinking (sanforizing): done to the fabric before it is cut, not to the finished garment. A wash also removes shrinkage, but at the garment stage, which is why a spec should be clear about which one it means.

They are complementary, not interchangeable: a garment can be cut from pre-shrunk fabric and still be washed for its look and hand.

How brands specify a garment wash

A wash is only reproducible if it is specified, and a vague brief is how two production runs end up looking different.

  • Write the wash into the spec: name the wash type, the target shade and the acceptable range, so the factory and any inspection work to the same standard the tech pack sets.
  • Approve against a standard: sign off a physical wash standard and shade band, and require every bulk lot to match it within tolerance, since wash results vary batch to batch.
  • Cost it in: washing adds cost and lead time and consumes a garment's margin for error, so the look has to be worth the process, and simpler washes are cheaper and more consistent.
